Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Corresponding author signs copyright agreement.
  • Final versions approved by all authors.
  • Listing of author contributions.
  • Data is deposited in relevant database (when applicable).
  • Corresponding author signs a confirmation that submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • Corresponding author signs a confirmation that no simultaneous submission of work fully or partially to any other journals.
  • All authors are required to submit full financial disclosure and any conflict of interest declared.
  • Corresponding author acknowledges financial support for research included in manuscript.
  • Corresponding author suggests reviewers and ask for exclusion of certain reviewers due to conflict of interest.
  • IRB Review, with use and care of animals, Helsinki Declaration for human subjects.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF document file format.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.

Author Guidelines

Style and Format
File format Manuscript can be submitted as either Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX) or rich-text format (RTF). Formats we do not accept include PDF, locked, compressed and protected files.


Length Manuscripts vary in length, however, we promote concise writing with 15 to 25 pages, one column per page double spaced font size 12.

Font Use Times New Roman font and font size 12.

Headings section headings are centered and all words in capital letters (UPPERCASE) and subheadings are in italics and the first letter of a sentence is capitalized (Sentence case) without numbering.

Layout Manuscript should be double-spaced and in a single column.

Page and line numbers continuous page numbers with no section number. Continuous line numbers should be included.

Footnotes are not permitted.

Language English (US)

Abbreviations are kept to a minimum, standard abbreviations. All abbreviations are to be defined on their first appearance. If a non-standard abbreviation is used more than three times in the text, it can be allowed.

Reference style according to Harvard referencing style. An example for in-text reference is "Conley & Galeson (1998)" i.e. "author (year)". An example for reference list "Conley, TG & Galeson, DW (1998), 'Nativity and wealth in mid-nineteenth century cities', Journal of Economic History, vol. 58, no. 2, pp. 468-493.". If more than two authors include only first author last name followed by "et al." without initials or other names.

Equations should be well-defined with the appropriate reference and use of symbols and mathematical operators.

 

Manuscript organization
The manuscript should be organized in the following sections:

  • Title
  • Authors

  • Figures and figure legends or captions

Title: all words capitalized (UPPERCASE) except organism scientific name. The length of the full title should be within 12 words. The title should be concise, specific and reflecting the main objective and result of the manuscript. Running title (short title) should be four indicative words that summarize the topic of the study.


Author list: all words capitalized (UPPERCASE), author names are entered on the title page of the manuscript and in the online submission system. Author names are written as follows a first name, middle initials and last name (family name).


The corresponding author should be indicated along with full contact information, including current email and address for correspondence.

Affiliations: all authors should include their affiliation during the preparation of the manuscript on the title page of the manuscript and in the online submission system.

Keywords: four to five keywords should be included for ease of search for the article. These should be indicative of the subject matter.

Introduction should not exceed 400 words and should include a brief overview of the key literature. At its end, the introduction should include the overall aim of the manuscript and objectives of the study.

Materials and Methods: Materials should be indicated with the source and origin e.g. DNeasy mini kit (Qiagen, CA, USA). Methods should be explicitly written so it can be easily reproduced by other researchers, with appropriate reference to the standard methods. Only modifications to well-established methods should be detailed, otherwise, references are mentioned.

Results and Discussion (one combined section) Results and discussion are not separable and should not repeat any of the materials and methods. An interpretation of the major trends of the data and their significance should be included in this section without repeating what is already shown by a figure or table. Subtitles in the results and discussion section should follow the format and styles mentioned.

Summary should not exceed 200 words and should include a brief background, aim or motivation of work, and summary of the main findings followed by a conclusion. It should consist of one paragraph without references.

References according to Harvard referencing style. An example for in-text reference is "Conley & Galeson (1998)" i.e. "author (year)". An example for reference list "Conley, TG & Galeson, DW (1998), 'Nativity and wealth in mid-nineteenth century cities', Journal of Economic History, vol. 58, no. 2, pp. 468-493.". If more than two authors include only first author last name followed by "et al." without initials or other names.

Tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their first appearance in the text. Table titles should be placed above the table according to example "Table (1): Taxa of Brassicaceae samples." Any statistical significance should be indicated in a footnote below each table. Avoid bulky tables; make tables clear and concise and only when needed.

Figures and figure legends or captions Figures should be of properly prepared, of high resolution (tiff or JPEG files with at least 600 dpi). Should be labeled with figure legends or captions and numbered according to appearance in-text. Figure legends or captions should be below each figure.

Additional information requested at submission:
The cover letter directed to the editorial office or editor-in-chief that summarizes the aim of work and significance to the field and how it fits the scope of the journal.
A copy of the approval of ethics committee or institutional review board (IRB) of the author institution at which the research has been done. This should be submitted at the time of submission. The manuscript will be subjected to plagiarism checker at the time of submission before the review, where a score of less than 20% similarity to published literature is acceptable.

Publication charges

Pre-acceptance fees (Article submission fees)

At the time of manuscript submission, authors need to send a check or money order to the Egyptian society of Genetics for 250 EGP (two hundred and fifty Egyptian Pounds) for Egyptians and $25 for internationals. These charges are paid prior to the start of the peer review and are non-refundable irrelevant to the final decision.

Post-acceptance fees or Article processing charges (Page charge)

In addition to the pre-acceptance fees, authors are required to pay 750 EGP (seven hundred and fifty Egyptian pounds) as a refundable fee. In a case of rejection, the 750 EGP are refunded to the authors. Upon acceptance of the article, authors are required to pay the remaining article processing charges based on the number of pages and any colored figures as printing charges based on the editorial page count. Page charge is $10/page for internationals or 120 EGP/page for Egyptians to the 10th pages and the charge per page doubles for each extra page. The cost for colored figures is 200EGP/figure for Egyptians and $25/figure for internationals. All checks or money orders should be addressed to “The Egyptian Society of Genetics”. All payments should be through the office of the secretary general of the society, Department of Genetics, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt.
